Regarding bestsellers…

Here’s a great article about the book industry, even though it’s a bit dated.

Ask a hundred authors what makes a book a bestseller, and you’ll get a hundred different answers.  For new authors with no established fan base, self promotion is the key to driving sales.

Yes, publishers will provide some initial promotional and marketing support, but they have several dozen titles on the launching pad and will throw their weight (and money) behind those with the most sales potential.
